About Sumly

Are the tools really free?

Yes. Every tool is free to use with no sign-up, no limits and no payment. The site is funded by adverts.

Do you store what I type?

No. All the tools run in your own browser. Salaries, prices, text and passwords you enter are never sent to our servers.

How accurate are the money calculators?

They use the current UK tax year's published rates and are checked when rates change, usually each April. They give a reliable estimate, but they're a guide only and not financial advice. For important decisions, check with HMRC, your lender or a qualified adviser.

Do the calculators work in Scotland and Wales?

Most tools work anywhere. The take-home pay calculator uses income tax bands for England, Wales and Northern Ireland, and the stamp duty calculator covers England and Northern Ireland only, because Scotland and Wales have their own property taxes.

Can I use the tools on my phone?

Yes. Every tool works on phones, tablets and computers. You can add the site to your home screen for quick access.

Can you add a new tool?

We're always adding tools. Email us through the contact page with your idea.

Take-home pay calculator

How much tax do I pay on £30,000?

In 2026/27 in England, Wales or Northern Ireland, someone earning £30,000 with no pension or student loan pays about £3,486 income tax and £1,394 National Insurance, taking home roughly £25,120 a year or £2,093 a month.

Why is my payslip different from this calculator?

Payslips can differ because of your tax code, benefits in kind, overtime, bonuses, or how your pension is set up. This calculator assumes the standard 1257L tax code and that your pension is paid by salary sacrifice.

Does this work for Scotland?

Not yet. Scotland has its own income tax bands. National Insurance and student loan figures are the same across the UK, but the income tax figure will be different for Scottish taxpayers.

What happens to my tax-free allowance over £100,000?

Your personal allowance falls by £1 for every £2 you earn over £100,000, and disappears completely at £125,140. This creates an effective 60% tax rate on income in that band.

EV salary sacrifice calculator

How does EV salary sacrifice save money?

You give up part of your gross salary to pay for the car, so you don't pay income tax or National Insurance on that slice. A 40% taxpayer saves 42% of the sacrificed amount. You then pay a small benefit-in-kind tax instead, which for electric cars is just 4% of the car's value in 2026/27.

What is benefit-in-kind on an electric car?

Benefit-in-kind (BIK) is the tax on a perk from your job. For fully electric cars it is 4% of the car's list price in 2026/27, rising to 5% in 2027/28, 7% in 2028/29 and 9% in 2029/30. You pay income tax on that amount at your usual rate.

Is salary sacrifice worth it for an EV?

For most taxpayers it's much cheaper than leasing a car personally, because of the tax and National Insurance savings and the very low BIK on electric cars. Check your salary won't drop below the minimum wage after the sacrifice, and that you'll keep the car long enough, as leaving early can carry charges.

Does salary sacrifice affect my pension or mortgage?

It lowers your gross salary, which can reduce pension contributions based on salary and the income figure a mortgage lender uses. Many schemes protect your pension; ask your employer. It can also help if it brings you under £100,000 and out of the 60% tax trap.

EV running cost calculator

How much does it cost to charge an electric car at home?

At the standard home electricity rate of around 25p per kWh, a typical EV doing 3.5 miles per kWh costs about 7p a mile. On a cheap overnight EV tariff near 7p per kWh, that falls to about 2p a mile.

Is an electric car really cheaper than petrol?

On fuel, usually yes if you can charge at home. A petrol car at 45 mpg costs around 17p a mile at current pump prices, against 2p to 8p a mile for a home-charged EV. Public rapid charging is dearer, often 20p to 25p a mile, which is similar to petrol.

What is miles per kWh?

It's how far an electric car travels on one unit of electricity, like miles per gallon for petrol. Most EVs manage 3 to 4.5 miles per kWh. Bigger or faster cars, and cold weather or motorway driving, lower the figure.

EV comparison tool

Where do I find a car's efficiency in miles per kWh?

Manufacturers usually quote it, or you can divide the official range by the usable battery size in kWh. Real-world figures are often a bit lower than the official ones, especially in winter and on motorways, so it's worth checking an owner review site.

What counts as good range for an electric car?

Most new EVs offer 200 to 300 miles of official range, and premium ones more. Real-world range is often 10% to 30% lower. If you mostly do short local trips and can charge at home, range matters less than you'd think.

How is the cost per mile worked out?

It divides the electricity price you enter by the car's miles per kWh. At 25p per kWh and 3.5 miles per kWh, that's about 7p a mile. A cheaper overnight tariff brings it right down.

Does this include charging time?

Yes. Enter each car's rapid charging speed in kW and its battery size, and the tool estimates a 10% to 80% rapid charge, which is the part you'd usually do on a longer journey.

Stamp duty calculator

Do first-time buyers pay stamp duty?

First-time buyers pay nothing on the first £300,000 and 5% on the portion between £300,001 and £500,000. If the property costs more than £500,000, no relief applies and you pay standard rates on the whole price.

How much is stamp duty on a second home?

If you'll own more than one home after buying, a 5% surcharge is added to every band. On a £250,000 second home, that means £15,000 rather than £2,500.

When do I pay stamp duty?

You must file a return and pay within 14 days of completion. Your solicitor or conveyancer usually handles this for you.

Does this work in Scotland or Wales?

No. Scotland has Land and Buildings Transaction Tax and Wales has Land Transaction Tax, which have different rates. This calculator covers England and Northern Ireland only.

Mortgage calculator

What is loan-to-value (LTV)?

Loan-to-value is the size of your mortgage as a percentage of the property's value. A £225,000 mortgage on a £250,000 home is 90% LTV. Lower LTVs usually get better interest rates, often at 60%, 75%, 85% and 90%.

Should I choose a shorter or longer term?

A longer term lowers your monthly payment but means you pay much more interest overall. Try both in the calculator to see the difference in total cost.

What's the difference between repayment and interest-only?

With a repayment mortgage, each payment covers interest and part of the loan, so you owe nothing at the end. With interest-only, you only pay the interest, so the full loan is still owed at the end of the term.

Savings calculator

What is AER?

AER (annual equivalent rate) shows what you'd earn in a year if interest were added and left to compound. It lets you compare accounts that pay interest monthly with ones that pay yearly.

Is interest on savings taxed?

Basic-rate taxpayers can earn £1,000 of savings interest a year tax-free and higher-rate taxpayers £500. Interest earned inside an ISA is always tax-free. This calculator shows interest before any tax.

Does this include inflation?

No. The figures are in today's pounds without adjusting for inflation. If inflation is higher than your savings rate, your money buys less over time even though the balance grows.

VAT calculator

How do I remove 20% VAT from a price?

Divide the VAT-inclusive price by 1.2. For example, £120 ÷ 1.2 = £100 net, so the VAT is £20. Don't multiply by 0.8, which gives the wrong answer.

How do I add 20% VAT?

Multiply the net price by 1.2. For example, £250 × 1.2 = £300 including VAT.

What items have 5% or 0% VAT?

The 5% reduced rate covers things like home energy and children's car seats. The 0% zero rate covers most food, children's clothes and books. Check GOV.UK for the full list.

Percentage calculator

How do I work out a percentage of a number?

Divide the percentage by 100 and multiply by the number. 15% of 250 is 0.15 × 250 = 37.5.

How do I calculate percentage increase?

Subtract the original value from the new value, divide by the original value and multiply by 100. Going from 80 to 100 is (100 − 80) ÷ 80 × 100 = 25%.

How do I take a percentage off a price?

Multiply the price by (100 − the discount) ÷ 100. For 30% off £60, that's £60 × 0.7 = £42.

Word counter

Is my text saved or uploaded?

No. The counting happens entirely in your browser, and nothing you type is sent to our servers.

How long is a UCAS personal statement?

UCAS personal statements have a limit of 4,000 characters including spaces. Use the characters count above to check.

How many words is a 5-minute speech?

Most people speak at about 130 to 150 words a minute, so a 5-minute speech is roughly 650 to 750 words.

Text case converter

What is sentence case?

Sentence case capitalises only the first letter of each sentence and proper nouns, like normal writing. It's the style GOV.UK and many UK publishers use for headings.

What is title case?

Title case capitalises the main words of a title. Short words such as 'and', 'of' and 'the' stay lower case unless they come first.

Will it fix names and places?

Sentence case and lower case can't tell which words are proper nouns, so check names and places afterwards.

Date calculator

Does the count include the end date?

No. The calculator counts the days from the start date up to, but not including, the end date. Add one if you want to include both days.

Are bank holidays excluded from working days?

No. Working days are Monday to Friday. Bank holidays differ between England and Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland, so subtract any that fall in your range.

How do I find the date 90 days from today?

Use the add or subtract section. Today's date is filled in for you, so just enter 90 in the days box.

Unit converter

How many pounds are in a stone?

There are 14 pounds in a stone, and one stone is about 6.35 kg.

Is a UK pint the same as a US pint?

No. A UK pint is 568 ml and a US pint is 473 ml. This converter uses UK imperial measures.

How do I convert Celsius to Fahrenheit?

Multiply by 9, divide by 5, then add 32. So 20°C is 68°F.

Password generator

Is it safe to use an online password generator?

This one generates passwords on your own device using the browser's cryptographic random number generator. Nothing is sent to or stored on our servers.

How long should a password be?

At least 12 characters, and 16 or more for important accounts such as email and banking. Length adds more strength than complexity.

How do I remember lots of random passwords?

Use a password manager. It stores them securely, fills them in for you, and means you only need to remember one strong master password.

QR code generator

Do these QR codes expire?

No. The code contains your link or text directly, so it works for as long as the link itself works. Some other sites use redirect links that stop working if you cancel a subscription.

Can I track scans?

Not directly. To count scans, use a link with tracking parameters, such as UTM tags, and check your website analytics.

What size should I print a QR code?

At least 2 cm wide for scanning at arm's length. For posters scanned from a distance, a good rule is one-tenth of the scanning distance.
