Useful word and character limits

Many writing tasks have a length limit. University essays are usually set in words, while UCAS personal statements are limited to 4,000 characters. Web page meta descriptions work best at around 155 characters, and posts on X are limited to 280 characters on a standard account.

How we count

A word is any group of characters separated by a space or line break. Sentences end with a full stop, question mark or exclamation mark. Paragraphs are separated by a blank line. Reading time is estimated at 230 words a minute, a typical adult reading speed.
